Upgrade

Keep the plugin and the nim command line up to date with one command, or update each agent's plugin by hand.

The plugin and nim are separate installs. Installing the plugin does not update nim, and updating nim does not update the plugin. nim update updates both.

How you find out

  • The plugin checks for a newer version at most once a day, and the agent mentions it the next time it uses the wiki.
  • nim checks npm at most once a day in the background and prints one line in your terminal when a newer version is out. When an agent runs it as an MCP server, the agent mentions it instead.

The checks send nothing about you or your wiki.

Update everything with nim

With nim installed (see CLI reference):

nim update

It updates nim itself and the wiki plugins for Claude Code and Codex, when claude or codex is on your PATH. It then checks that each one is on the new version, reports any that did not update, and tells you what to restart.

CommandEffect
nim update --checkReport what is out of date without changing anything. Exits with code 1 if anything is.
nim update --dry-runPrint the commands it would run.
nim update --only cliUpdate only nim. Also --only claude or --only codex.
nim doctorShow the installed versions and where each comes from.

nim update never uses sudo. When npm cannot write to its global folder, it prints the command for you to run yourself. A nim installed as a project dependency or run through npx is left alone.

Update by hand

Claude Code. Run both commands, then restart Claude Code:

claude plugin marketplace update nimbalyst-wiki
claude plugin update nimbalyst-wiki@nimbalyst-wiki

If you use a team wiki, also update the team add-on:

claude plugin update nimbalyst-wiki-team@nimbalyst-wiki

Claude Code updates the plugin on its own only if you turn on auto-update for its marketplace (/plugin, then Marketplaces). The Claude desktop app runs Claude Code with its updater off, which also stops plugin auto-update unless FORCE_AUTOUPDATE_PLUGINS=1 is set.

Codex. Run this, then start a new session:

codex plugin marketplace upgrade nimbalyst-wiki

nim. Reinstall the latest version:

npm install -g @nimbalyst/cli

Restart after an update

A process that started before the update keeps the old version:

  • Claude Code: run /reload-plugins or start a new session.
  • Codex and other agents: start a new session, so the agent restarts the wiki server.
  • nim wiki serve: stop it with Ctrl+C and start it again.

Your wiki is plain files in your project, so updating changes nothing in it.
